Because the brush artist knew restraint, the black ink hits harder here. One stem, four leaves, and a great deal of empty cream paper — which is exactly what makes a busy wall go quiet. Hung on a plain off-white or pale plaster wall it gives the eye somewhere to rest, and it makes the wood and textiles around it look more considered. It works above a low bed, a writing desk or a narrow hallway console, at eye level in a spot you walk past slowly. Keep the company simple: linen, cream stoneware, pale or dark wood, one soft lamp. Don't crowd it with bright colour or heavy pattern — the ink loses its edge the moment something else shouts. On fine-art paper the soft brush edges and paper tone stay believably hand-inked.
