By evening, the ink wave stops looking decorative and starts working. Once the lamps are on, the grey brushmarks warm up against the cream background and the whole wall settles down. Hang it low over a bed, a bench or a long sideboard where the wide shape can stretch out — it needs air on both sides to read properly. Keep the company simple: pale wood, off-white linen, plain stoneware, a chalky painted wall. It also holds its own on a hallway wall with nothing else near it. What it will not survive is clutter — busy patterned wallpaper, a shelf of small ornaments, or three other pictures crowding in will flatten the empty space that makes it work.
